Stramit Longspan® plays key role in Tobruk Memorial Pool redevelopment

10 July 2016

Stramit’s quality products and service promise have ensured one of Cairns’ iconic sporting venues continues to honour the contribution of Australian soldiers while remaining a fitting home for the next generation of local athletes.

An important element of the North Cairns Sporting Precinct, the Tobruk Memorial Pool and its surrounding facilities underwent a local council endorsed $23.7 million redevelopment after falling into disrepair.

Cairns-based MMP Architects was briefed to develop a contemporary swimming complex that epitomised the integral values of Australian soldiers past and present and the modern-day athlete. Creating a facility that wouldn’t require future operational subsidies was considered equally important.

Michael Martino of MMP Architects said they couldn’t go past the Stramit Longspan® profile when it came to selecting a roofing profile for the pool area’s curved elongated roof – a highlight of the redevelopment.

“We’ve worked with Stramit for decades but we investigated various similar alternatives, and decided Stramit Longspan® would be most suitable from an aesthetic and design perspective.

“Stramit Longspan® is also unique in its rip depth and the number of ribs per sheet, which provided the best drainage capacity and cyclonic strength, while also maintaining the ability to curve successfully over the demanding roof design,” Michael explains.

And roof installer, HPS Contractors, couldn’t agree more.

“The ability of Stramit Longspan® to adapt to the extreme contours of the Tobruk Main Building was critical to achieving quality construction,” HPS Contractors Director, Bruce McDonald, said.

According to Michael Martino, Stramit’s reputation for personalised customer service from start to finish was another important factor in opting for Stramit.

“Stramit liaised with the entire project team during the design, documentation and construction stages. They worked with the principal contractor and the roofing contractor, and extended their support to the project design architect, structural engineer, mechanical services and hydraulics consultants,” Michael recalls.

“This ensured no significant issues ensued and supply, installation and commissioning were seamless.

“Overall our client was extremely happy with the result. Stramit Longspan® is an excellent product that is well suited to this type of project.”
