Stramit helps deliver Queensland’s first mega cruise ship terminal

3 September 2020

Queensland will soon have its first mega cruise ship terminal, using Stramit quality products.

The new $177 million Brisbane International Cruise Terminal will have purpose-built facilities to accommodate some of the world’s largest cruise vessels, including mega ships such as the Royal Caribbean International's 293m-long Radiance of the Seas.

Hindmarsh Construction Australia was the principal contractor for the Terminal Building, which consists of a 10,000m2 two-level passenger terminal that includes: commercial space for a cafe and light retail; arrival, check-in, security and quarantine areas; a plaza area and waterfront promenade; parking facilities for over 900 cars; a 275 metre elevated walkway; and a transport interface with designated zones for chartered coaches, taxis and rideshare vehicles.

Stramit was chosen by roofing contractor Dowbury Pty Ltd to supply materials for this project because of the team’s strong history of delivering products for major commercial projects on time and to the required specifications.

Chris Daly, project manager, Dowbury Pty Ltd, said, “We chose Stramit for this significant, largescale project because we knew we could rely on the team’s high-quality products and service promise.

“Stramit’s Exacta-Z Purlin system was ideal for this project because of the product’s inbuilt structural design efficiencies that maximise product performance, which is critical for a high-use, multi-purpose structure located in a marine environment.

“The dimensionally optimised Stramit product also provided savings in purlin steel, which helped us to more easily manage construction costs. We used it in conjunction with the Stramit Speed Deck Ultra profile, which has an excellent water carrying capacity, especially at low pitches.

“We also used Stramit’s zinc, aluminium and magnesium (ZAM) purlins, and Magnaflow wall and roof sheeting, which are vastly superior, corrosion-resistant products specifically designed for harsh environments.

“All of Stramit’s products were easy to use and quick to install. The products will provide an ongoing benefit for the Port of Brisbane because these products won’t require maintenance.”

Mick Conlon, project account manager, Stramit, said, “The Stramit Exacta-Z Purlin system, combined with the Stramit Speed Deck Ultra profile, ZAM purlins and Magnaflow wall and roof sheeting provide the exceptional level of durability that is required for the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal.

“Stramit’s Speed Deck Ultra profile has a four-point fixing clip that exceeds all building expectations with regard to serviceability and strength. This is critical in building design, and especially for a world-class facility such as the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal. The concealed fixed Speed Deck Ultra roof sheeting is trusted by many commercial builders and roofing contractors Australia-wide, and it is the only roofing profile to ever win an Australian Design award.

“The combination of Stramit Exacta-Z Purlins and Stramit Speed Deck Ultra concealed fixed decking allows the construction of economical, high-performance roofs for large portal frame buildings such as the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal building and parking facility.”

In addition to durability, Stramit’s products helped deliver construction cost savings through lowering material costs. For example, Stramit’s Exacta-Z Purlin system allows up to 20 per cent of savings in purlin steel by improving purlin capacity and increasing spans or spacing.

Mick Conlon said, “The many construction and operational benefits provided by Stramit’s world-class products made Stramit the perfect choice for the world-class Brisbane International Cruise Terminal.”
